Slow art has a basic mission: it makes people discovering the pleasure to look at art.
The idea was born in 2008 by Phil Terry.
Terry asked himself what would have happened if museums’ and galleries’ visitors would have modified the way they deal with art. Why not limit the action field just to a few artworks, giving them more time, instead of browsing hundreds of works in a short time?
In 2009 he started first visits with groups of people. The feedbacks were positive, visitors appreciated the experience and people understand this kind of formula can be applied to different structures, places and with every genre of art.
Why slow? Because, by observing an artwork in a proper time is possible to discover something. The greatest one for participants is: you can experience art, without having a specific experience. This procedure releases passions and creativity into spectators and contributes to keep loyalty and interest towards artistic practices.
How does it work? The participants are invited to look at art slowly. They choose some artworks and dedicate 10 minutes for each one. After the observation, the public meets and everyone shares his or her impressions about the experience.
During time, this contemplation leads spectator to focus on aspects that maybe wouldn’t have emerged with a quick look. Different thoughts are important because they enrich the own artwork, they develop and articulate comments around it.
Slow Art is only composed by volunteers. Anyone can become volunteer, it’s a global movement, acting all over the world, thanks to new technologies support.

La slow art ha una missione semplice: fa scoprire a chi vi aderisce il piacere dell’osservare l’arte.
L’idea nasce nel 2008 da Phil Terry.
Terry si chiese cosa sarebbe successo se i visitatori dei musei e delle gallerie avessero modificato il modo in cui fruivano dell’arte. Invece di passare in rassegna centinaia di opere in un tempo limitato, perché non restringere il campo di azione solo ad alcune, concedendo loro più tempo?
Nel 2009 comincia le prime visite con gruppi di persone, i feedback sono positivi, i visitatori apprezzano l’esperienza, e si comprende che questo tipo di formula può essere applicata in più tipi di strutture, nei luoghi più disparati e con ogni genere di arte.
Perché slow? Perché osservando con i giusti tempi un’opera è possibile fare delle scoperte.
La più grande per chi partecipa è questa: si può fare esperienza dell’arte senza una vera esperienza nel campo. È un procedimento che sblocca le passioni e la creatività nello spettatore contribuisce a fidelizzare l’interesse nei confronti della pratica artistica.
Come funziona? I partecipanti sono invitati a guardare l’arte lentamente. Essi scelgono delle opere, e dedicano a ciascuna di queste 10 minuti. Finita l’osservazione il pubblico si incontra e scambia impressioni sull’esperienza.
Questa contemplazione protratta nel tempo porta lo spettatore a concentrarsi su aspetti che forse non sarebbero emersi con un’osservazione più veloce, le varie riflessioni di ciascun membro sono importanti perché arricchiscono il testo stesso dell’opera, sviluppano e articolano le osservazioni attorno a essa.
Slow Art è composto esclusivamente da volontari. Chiunque può diventare volontario, è un movimento globale, che agisce in tutto il mondo, grazie al supporto delle nuove tecnologie.
